Wendy Stillman

Artist Spotlight | The Art of the Ride – Tour de Pier

The Art of the Ride celebrates the creativity of the South Bay by inviting local artists to transform stationary bikes into bold works of public art. One of the featured artists is Wendy Stillman, whose vibrant work is deeply rooted in surf culture and the visual language of the 1980s.

Wendy Stillman's art celebrates surf culture, the power of symbols, and powerful storytelling. Stillman has been drawing and painting since childhood.

After traveling and living abroad during her youth, she eventually landed on the beaches of Southern California in the early 1980s. Living in Newport Beach and Corona del Mar during the height of surf culture left a lasting impression on her artistic style. The bold graphics, bright colors, and symbols of early surf brands shape the visual language that Stillman continues to explore today.

Stillman's work often features bright colors, expressive figures, and layered symbols inspired by surf culture and global influences. One recurring symbol is the X — a cultural marker referencing the experiences and artistic movements that shaped her generation.

Her paintings create immersive visual worlds where figures and symbols move through layers of color and texture, inviting viewers to explore her perspective and personal story.

Her bike is both a work of art and a symbol of community momentum — reminding us that creativity and collective action can help move us closer to a cancer-free future.

For The Art of the Ride, Stillman channels those influences into a dynamic design that reflects movement, freedom, and the energy of the surf and skate culture that defines Southern California.
