At the Tour de Pier, every rider has a story of love, resilience, and unwavering support. In our latest Why I Ride video, we highlight the We Are Family team, a remarkable group of friends turned family who embody the heart of the TDP.
Amy, the team’s founder, recalls how she was drawn into a tight-knit South Bay community where friendships go beyond the ordinary. It all started at OB’s Bar & Grill in Manhattan Beach, where she witnessed an incredible support system rallying around Tina, who was battling breast cancer. That same community later came together for Deb, a beloved friend diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Through loss and hardship, these bonds only grew stronger.
This unshakable connection inspired Amy to form We Are Family and ride in the Tour de Pier, not just to raise funds for cancer research but to honor those they’ve lost and those still fighting.
For many, Tour de Pier is more than just a stationary cycling event; it’s a testament to the power of community. Lawrence, who lost his father to a brain tumor, initially resisted joining, but Amy’s persistence won him over. “After the first time, I was hooked,” he admits, realizing how much strength and hope radiate from the event.
Stephen, another dedicated member, has seen cancer affect multiple loved ones, from his parents to close friends. His generosity knows no bounds, making him one of the team’s top fundraisers. Tour de Pier has given him an avenue to turn grief into action, helping fund vital research that can change lives.
Ashlee, a longtime friend and supporter, never imagined she would one day be on the receiving end of the community’s love. Diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram, she underwent surgery just weeks before Tour de Pier. Despite the pain, she showed up to support the team because that’s what family does. This year, she’s back on the bike, riding not just for herself but for every survivor, fighter, and family impacted by cancer.
Tour de Pier is a powerful reminder for the We Are Family team that no one fights alone. Whether riding in honor of a lost loved one or to inspire those still in the fight, every pedal is a step toward progress.
